How Computer-Adaptive GRE Scoring Works

Unlike question-adaptive tests, the GRE adapts at the section level. Your performance on the first 12 questions dictates the difficulty and score ceiling of the second section.

Branch 1

Hard Section 2

Answering 9–12 questions correctly in Section 1 unlocks the Hard Section 2. This awards a difficulty bonus and unlocks scores from 158 to 170.

Branch 2

Medium Section 2

Answering 5–8 questions correctly routes you to the Medium Section 2. Final scores typically range between 148 and 158 with neutral scaling.

Branch 3

Easy Section 2

Scoring 0–4 correct routes to the Easy Section 2. The score is penalized with a ceiling capped around 150 even with perfect Section 2 accuracy.

Question 1 Quantitative algebra

Given Condition: xx is a nonzero real number.
Quantity A
(x+1)2(x + 1)^2
Quantity B
(x−1)2(x - 1)^2
Compare Quantity A and Quantity B based on the given condition.
Show Official Answer & Step-by-Step Rationale
Correct Answer: The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
Step-by-Step Proof:
1. Expand both quantities: - Quantity A: x2+2x+1x^2 + 2x + 1 - Quantity B: x2−2x+1x^2 - 2x + 1 2. Subtract x2+1x^2 + 1 from both quantities: - Quantity A becomes 2x2x - Quantity B becomes −2x-2x 3. Test cases based on sign: - If x=2x = 2 (positive): Quantity A =4= 4, Quantity B =−4  ⟹  Quantity A>Quantity B= -4 \implies \text{Quantity A} > \text{Quantity B}. - If x=−2x = -2 (negative): Quantity A =−4= -4, Quantity B =4  ⟹  Quantity B>Quantity A= 4 \implies \text{Quantity B} > \text{Quantity A}. Because the relative order flips when xx switches signs, the relationship cannot be determined.
Common ETS Trap Warning:
Standard ETS trap: examinees unconsciously test only positive integers (x=1,2x = 1, 2), where Quantity A is larger, and fail to test negative values where the inequality inverts.
🎯 Key Rule:
Always test numbers from the "ZONE F" framework: Zero, One, Negatives, Extremes, and Fractions.
Question 2 Quantitative algebra

If 3x−7=2(x+4)3x - 7 = 2(x + 4), what is the value of x2−10x^2 - 10?
Show Official Answer & Step-by-Step Rationale
Correct Answer: 215215
Step-by-Step Proof:
1. Solve for xx: 3x−7=2x+83x - 7 = 2x + 8 3x−2x=8+7  ⟹  x=153x - 2x = 8 + 7 \implies x = 15 2. Calculate x2−10x^2 - 10: 152−10=225−10=21515^2 - 10 = 225 - 10 = 215 Thus, the correct answer is 215215.
🎯 Key Rule:
Always read the prompt carefully: ETS often asks for an expression like x2−10x^2 - 10 rather than xx itself.
Question 3 Verbal text completion
Select a choice for each blank
Although the initial findings appeared promising, subsequent rigorous testing proved that the proposed vaccine was largely ______, demonstrating no statistically significant efficacy.
Blank (i)
Show Official Answer & Step-by-Step Rationale
Correct Answer: ineffectual
Step-by-Step Proof:
The sentence structure uses the contrast pivot "Although" ("appeared promising") paired with the explanatory elaboration "demonstrating no statistically significant efficacy." The blank must mean failing to produce an effect. "Ineffectual" directly matches this definition.
🎯 Key Rule:
Identify structural pivot words (Although, Despite, But) to determine if the blank supports or reverses the initial clause.
