Essential GRE Pacing Rules
Speed is trained by eliminating time sinks, not by rushing calculations. Follow these three test-day pacing rules:
The Two-Pass Technique
Never get stuck on question 3 for four minutes. Complete all single-step questions on your first pass in 30โ60 seconds each. Mark complex multi-blank or data interpretation questions and tackle them on pass two.
Calculator Discipline
The on-screen calculator is slow to click. Use it only for long multi-digit division or compound percentages. If you find yourself doing extensive algebra in the calculator, you missed the conceptual shortcut.
No Penalty for Guessing
The GRE has zero penalty for incorrect answers. If 60 seconds remain and you have two unanswered questions, make an educated guess immediately before the section timer expires.
